This week we met back in person at the San Diego KOA and we heard from Captain Eric Thunberg from the Chula Vista Police Department.  Captain Thunberg gave an overview of some of the recent issues within the police department and how they strive to "keep the community safe."

Captain Thunberg stated that our city is one of the safest in the state. We learned that violent crimes are relatively low, and that statistics indicate that sexual assaults and residential burglaries are down in the past few years. However, because of COVID, domestic violence, vehicle robberies, aggravated assault, and carjackings are up.  We learned about the decrease in response times, mainly due to the successful drone  and 911 Live programs.  There is currently a staffing shortage, but 18 current recruits and candidates are soon to complete the academy at Miramar.

We hope to have a representative from the police department join us more often so we can learn what is happening within the department. For more info on some of these programs, please visit their website at  https://www.chulavistaca.gov/departments/police-department.
